A kinked or frozen water line is one of the most frequent causes. Check behind the refrigerator for any obvious kinks in the line, and confirm the shutoff valve behind the fridge is fully open. If the line has frozen inside the freezer wall, it may need to thaw before ice production resumes.
A clogged or overdue water filter restricts flow enough to slow or stop ice production. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the filter every six months, but usage and water quality can shorten that window.
It sounds obvious, but the on/off switch or arm can get bumped accidentally, especially in freezers with a lot of stored items. Double check that the ice maker itself is switched on before assuming there's a mechanical problem.
Sometimes the fill tube that delivers water into the ice tray freezes over, blocking new water from entering even though the rest of the ice maker is functioning normally. This is often caused by the freezer running slightly too cold or a small water leak that refreezes.
If everything upstream checks out, the fill valve itself, the component that opens to let water into the ice maker, may be malfunctioning. This typically requires professional diagnosis, since testing it properly involves checking water pressure and electrical signals.
Confirm the water line valve is open, the filter isn't overdue, and the ice maker switch is on. These three checks resolve a large share of "no ice" complaints without needing a repair visit.
