If you find yourself running a second, third, or even fourth cycle to fully dry a load, something's interfering with your dryer's efficiency. Most of the time, the cause is simpler than you'd expect.
This is by far the most common cause of slow drying. A lint screen that isn't cleaned before every load, or a vent line clogged with lint buildup, restricts airflow and traps moist air inside the drum. Vent clogs also happen gradually, so drying times often creep up slowly rather than dropping off all at once.
A drum packed too full doesn't tumble properly, which means clothes in the middle of the load don't get consistent airflow. Try splitting a large load into two smaller ones and comparing drying times.
If the dryer runs, tumbles, and the timer counts down normally, but clothes come out barely warm, the heating element may be partially failing rather than fully dead. This often shows up as a gradual increase in drying time before eventual total failure.
Some dryers use moisture sensors to determine when a load is done. If the sensor is dirty or malfunctioning, the dryer may run longer than necessary trying to reach a moisture level it's misreading.
Long or heavily bent vent runs create more resistance for the dryer to push air through. This is more of an installation issue than a mechanical failure, but it has the same effect: longer drying times and increased lint buildup over time.
Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent flap to make sure it opens freely when the dryer runs. If drying time is still excessive after that, the issue is more likely mechanical or related to the vent line itself.
